Native Design :: Lead Creative Technologist
Native Design is a leading integrated experience design company that delivers both industrial and interaction design solutions to many of the worlds’ leading brands including Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, HP, Audi, Mercedes, Bentley and the BBC. They are based in London, San Francisco and Amsterdam.
I was employed as their lead creative technologist, helping them create the cutting edge, intelligent products of tomorrow that help disrupt key industries and markets. The majority of my client-based work for is still under very strict NDAs but involved working on key Hewlett Packard, Pernod Ricard, Bowers and Wilkins and SFR products.
In addition to the client-centric creative technology i was also responsible for more Technical Direction-orientated roles like sourcing, recruiting and managing their Windows, Android, IOS and Arduino developers, establishing a secure, scalable developer environment (GitHub Enterprise Edition, Jira, HipChat), setting up a Dev, Staging and Production (EC2) server and the associated work flows to support it. I also technically vetted all their internal Labs projects, installed a company-wide knowledge sharing platform and assisted the directors, both technically and creatively, on many successful pitches too.
Billington Cartmell, Brave and Closer Live :: Technical Director
I was appointed Technical Director of Billington Cartmell (www.bcl.co.uk), their sister adverting agency, Brave (www.brave.co.uk) and their experiential arm, Closer (www.closerlive.co.uk) in January 2012. The group of companies between them represent a phenomenal array of leading clients including Carlsberg, Panasonic, Sennheiser, Philips, Unilever, Kraft, GSK, Lexus, Morrisons and Ernst & Young.
Ellas Kitchen :: The Big Outdoors Facebook App
Whilst at Billington Cartmell i was responsible for the Big Outdoors Facebook App that allowed parents to upload ideas for outdoor activity ideas for their young children. The best ideas were then put into leader-boards and the users could then vote on them. The response was very positive and many parents commented on how useful it is. I was responsible for the entire build and it was done using my own bespoke Facebook/Wordpress framework.
Ellas Kitchen :: Spin to Win Facebook App
The Ellas Kitchen ‘Spin to Win’ Facebook App was a flash-frontend, php-backend game by which users had to spin a pin wheel on the screen and whatever item it finished on was the item that the user one. Most prizes were voucher based and the fulfillment of these was done via Coupons.com. The ease of use and the significant discounts trough the vouchers combined to make this a very successful campaign with thousands of new ‘Friends of Ellas’ being signed up. This project again used the WordPress framework I created to power both the flash communication with Faceboook via JS and the Php backend for the game.
Ellas Kitchen :: Global Website, Email and eCRM Platform
Ellas Kitchen, a Billington Cartmell client, is one of the worlds leading organic baby food manufacturers and i was responsible for the build and roll out of a new eCRM platform that consisted of a multi-site WordPress-based platform for websites with email, Facebook and customer service functionality built in.
Global Website Platform with Localised Sites
The website was designed on the clients request to emulate the cartoon look and feel of the brand including ‘wiggly borders’ on all assets. The site was a full rebuild mainly in PHP and HTML5 with the odd flash asset for selected animation. Full localisation for European territories, America and Australia is possible and further territories could be added at will. All content and functional modules could be seamlessly deployed between territories creating both content aggregation, convenience and economies of scale. Customer details were also stored centrally and a Single Customer view was achieved that proves invaluable in email marketing and intelligent design and communication. eCommerce was the most recent addition to the platform enabling all their products to be purchased and their inventory to be managed centrally.
Part of the eCRM Platform was the ability for the client to login and create targeted email campaigns at will from editable templates that we had designed for them. Using Campaign Monitors API we seamlessly connected the global customer view from the websites and Facebook apps into a filterable mail list enabling detailed user segmentation for the creation and serving of highly targeted messaging.
The final significant piece to the Ellas Kitchen eCRM platform was the Facebook App management technology that we encoded within the environment and ran off a multi-site SSL. This enabled Facebook Apps to be deployed as easily as a new site, containing all the predefined generic functionality that apps require like like-gates, accepting permissions, sharing, identifying top ten friends, storing user data etc. The only ‘work’ that needed doing was the creative and content layer to sit on top.

St Ives :: 'Bare to Dare' Facebook Campaign
Whilst at Billington Cartmell I was responsible for many Facebook Campaigns for their lead client, Unilever. The St Ives ‘Bare to Dare’ campaign was a two stage campaign that featured almost naked male models revealing all for the first part, then inviting ‘real women’ to take and share a picture of themselves without make up. I technically drove the entire project from conception to delivery and areas of importance included the rejection of the initial concepts on feasibility grounds, advising the video shoot on how to maximise footage captured by using a non-linear approach to the outputted content, resolving the technical mechanic of how visitors translated to revealing the models and overseeing the build and code use within both the flash front end and php back-end.
Dove :: Stay Colourful Facebook App
Dove is a client of Billington Cartmell and the Stay Colourful Facebook App required a Wordpress based Php back-end for storing and sharing of the pictures coupled with an advanced flash front end for the Filters and File Management. I was responsible for overseeing the freelance flash development and ensuring the the Php back-end was written in a modular way ensuring its portability into the in-house code WordPress framework that i had initiated for future ease of reuse.
T-Mobile :: Androids Launch in the UK
Whilst at Saatchi and Saatchi I was responsible for technically overseeing the launch of the Android platform in the UK for TMobile. Items included the creation of the UK’s first Android game, an AS3 Flash micro site and a wealth of online advertising for the UK launch of the G1 Phone from Google (the UKs first Android phone). The G1 Mapping Game / Engine utilised the new Open Source mobile Android operating system and could be played on the phone or downloaded as a Open Source SDK from T-Mobile to assist developers to develop new, map-based games. The AS3 site also included a game with full database driven scoring and viral functionality. Throughout both projects I had to liaise regularly with Google, their business and technical contacts and the our games developers. In addition to this, I also managed a series of multi-lingual rich-media banner campaigns including one for the launch of the new G1 Phone from Google and assisted in the procurement of suitable external companies to work on a new dance-based avatar’ campaign.

Cadburys :: Touch Screen Game
Whilst at Saatchi and Saatchi I was responsible for researching and writing the technical and functional specifications on a touch screen game campaign for Cadburys Cream Eggs to be used over the Christmas period in London-based bus shelters. The campaign was utilising outdoor media owners JC Decaux’s screens and technologies and, thus, I had to liaise with their technologists too.
