About the role – Technical Director

We’ve re-cut the technology team to ensure we continue to deliver great creative technology in today’s hyper connected evolving digital landscape.  Ever increasing standards of technical and creative excellence are the only constancy.  These changes have opened up an opportunity for a talented Technical Director to lead the iris team.

We’re looking for a multi-disciplinary technical lead, with both hands on and managerial experience of a range of technologies including front-end, flash / actionscript, ASP.net, and PHP.

Of course, you’ll have great in-depth knowledge a range of web solutions and understand all aspects of the project lifecycle including scoping, delivery, risk, QA and deployment.

Knowing and understanding the ideal is great, but in the fast paced, delivery focused environment of a digital agency the confidence to make a quick decision on your feet and provide a calm steady hand of leadership when others cannot see a way forward is key to helping us make the project a reality.

You will be responsible for developing our process, best-practice approaches and structure to enable us to be best in class.

You will also be working closely with the Creative Technology Director to help drive creative use of technology within the iris group.

Key responsibilities

We’ve broken things down to help make things clear:

Leadership & solution delivery

  • Oversee or lead the development of projects across developer teams and for multiple clients.

  • Manage concerns or issues as they become apparent and work to a resolution with key stake holders, developer teams and the project manager.

  • Set and monitor the quality of the work produced by the development team, ensuring that it meets the required standards.

  • Work with the project management and developer team to set and meet project deadlines

  • Work with the QA manager and lead developer to ensure bug-free, fully tested projects are deployed

  • Drive the project to completion without the stress by highlighting risks and mitigating them

People

  • Build a strong and high performing team through active management and inspirational leadership.

  • Understand resourcing needs and drive the interview process for new developers.

  • Keeping a close eye on performance of the team by actively participating in appraisals and staff reviews

  • Taking responsibility for team performance and quality of output

  • Inspire colleagues across the agency with your passion for digital work and examples of best practise

  • Help create an atmosphere where collaboration leads to the delivery of extraordinary ideas.

Conceptualisation and scoping

  • Work alongside creative technologists, creatives and strategists to develop digital creative concepts from a technology perspective

  • Assist account team in the strategy & planning of technical projects

  • Understand project requirements and translate into technical requirements in the scoping phase

  • Review design concepts in conjunction with the development team prior to sign-off to ensure that realistic timescales are agreed

Creative technology

  • Help to ensure technology is embedded in the creative process and appropriate technologies are used to delivery extraordinary solutions.

  • Suggest alternative technical solutions and harness innovation to meet client requirements more efficiently and proactively.

  • Evaluate, concept and prove emerging technologies as a basis for technical solutions to client needs.

  • Develop and help implement innovation strategy with the Creative Technology Director

Project resourcing

  • Work with the technical leads, resource managers and Head of Project Management to resource projects to developers based on skill set.

  • Oversee freelancers & 3rd parties used by the team to ensure correct process is followed and standards are maintained.

  • Work with the digital service director to select and manage outsource partners both local and off shore

You must bring with you:

  • Energetic, can do approach to delivering work

  • Cool head under pressure with the ability to see the way forward when others are lost

  • Ability to keep an eye on the detail even when 5 projects are jostling for your attention

  • The drive to find the most efficient way to deliver web based content and applications

  • A love of new technologies and buzz of excitement in what can be achieved when the right technologies are used

  • Experience of effectively mentoring and managing a multi-discipline team and working with them to ensure work is completed to only the highest standards

Experience with:

  • Past experience as a hands on developer and manager.

  • Experience leading teams of teams

  • Ability to communicate and influence at a board level

  • Past experience working with clients to sell in ideas and capture requirements

  • Experience working with creative’s and concepting projects

  • Experience in the practical application of a range of software development methodologies

  • Proven digital agency experience is required

  • A solid understanding, ideally backed up by hands on experience in ASP.net, PHP, HTML, CSS, Flash and Actionscript, Facebook development and mobile development.

  • A thorough, broad, innovative knowledge and understanding of the Internet and emerging technologies and standards

  • Experience of working on consumer-facing high traffic sites

  • An understanding of data security and its application in consumer facing sites such as competitions and within social networking platforms

  • Experience of working on localised sites for global markets

  • Knowledge of GIT or SVN and its implementation on team level desirable

  • Solid understanding of end-to-end infrastructure including high availability server environments, preferably Microsoft based

The Role:

  • Responsible for building and leading a small team and working with external partners to turn conceptual ideas into global stable innovative digital solutions

  • You will have input into creative decisions and pitches as well as ownership of the technical decisions for all projects you are involved in. You’ll shape the development team and work closely with them, along with designers, creative and client services teams.

  • You’ll be responsible for coming up with creative solutions for enhance current in store user experience, overcoming technical problems, and for making sure that every project you supervise is stable, error-free and meets client expectations.

  • You should be interested in emerging technologies and trends, be keen and capable to develop rapid prototypes and develop new solutions. A strong interest in experimentation, and have an expert knowledge of front- and back end coding technologies and server architectures. You should also know about, or be interested in learning about, the issues and opportunities of revolutionizing the retail environment from grocers to high street retailers to bring new experiences and engagement into a store.

  • We’re looking for people who live for technology and love to collaborate and apply a creative layer to technical solutions. You will be at the heart of the creative process so a good appreciation of usability and interaction design will be required. Preference will be given to technologists with skills in other areas as well, be it Objective C or Java programming, gaming, electronics or motion graphics.

  • Understand and continually evolve the Barrows vision and integration of new online and offline touch points to influence the path to purchase, pre, in and post store.

Responsibilities:

 

Rapid Prototyping

  • Meeting with clients and peers to explore and push new opportunities and solutions to existing retail environments.

  • Continually pushing boundaries of what’s possible with new technologies and leveraging partnerships from Intel to small start ups.

  • Hands on responsibility for delivery of programmes from conceptual idea to prototypes and global stable solutions in market

  • Facilitate the formulation of a final brief and SOW in collaborative manor with client/creative team.

  • Manage multiple global projects and deadlines and consistently deliver innovative solutions on time and on budget

  • Communicate product features to a team and/or client

  • Be cognisant of user experience as related to user interaction with a final product.

  • Maintain a close connection to key deliverables as laid out in a brief.

  • Prepare rough concepts and rapid prototypes related to the final product output.

 

Creation of wireframe planning documents detailing software outputs

  • Creation of information architecture maps to act a base for further design processes.

  • Conceptualize as a team or individually specific product features

  • Code clearly and maintain consistency; code must be well documented with minimal bugs and errors

  • Ensure all projects are completed with the highest level of aesthetics while maintaining maximized usability and functionality

Conceptualize and develop the interactive systems

  • Candidate should therefore have a broad range of design and technical knowledge and proven experience of utilizing their skills and expertise in helping to define and deliver digital solutions.

  • Candidates should be conversant in design and technical terminology, enthusiastic about all things digital and be able to draw on expertise of specialists in the team around them when necessary.

  • Above the successful candidate will be hands on with a can-do attitude that has a desire to push boundaries and is excited and to work in a rapid, fast moving entrepreneurial environment.
